top 10 hosting

There are loads of web hosting companies in the UK and around the world, mainly the US, but which one should you choose to host your personal or your business website?

Actually, let’s address why there is such an abundance of these hosting companies which are available to us. While there are many original and authentic hosts around us to choose from, there are also a lot of what we call “Resellers”.  They are so called “hosting companies” but they don’t actually own their own servers nor do they have any good support. So how can they do this? Well, they sign up to a hosting reseller package from a big hosting provider like HostPapa or BlueHost and what this essentially provides them with is server space to resell to other non-suspecting website hosting hunters who never did their research. The reseller package allows the reseller to cut up his original space and sell to others. Now, is this a company that you want to sign up your website to? Probably not, so make sure you avoid them.

So, how do you know which hosts are resellers and which ones are the original hosts? Well, you can do your research before you make your decision on choosing a web hosting provider. Read forums and blogs locally in the UK and US and see what other people think. See if there is a lot on the web written about them. Check out their Alexa ranking. Resellers will not have a high rank. For your information, rank 1 is the highest (Google is currently at this position, Facebook 2nd, Youtube 3rd and Yahoo 4th). Also, try to find out how many people have signed up their website to host with them. Or more simply, choose a web hosting company that I have recommended here. They are all authentic and original and hosts which I have personally used myself.

OK, so now what defines the best web hosting service provider? This is a difficult question to answer but, we can simplify it down to several factors to make it more manageable to make our decision which includes the following:

Server uptime

This is probably the most important factor when choosing the right web hosting company because the whole point of having a website is so that people can access it for more information on what you are sharing with the world, so what good is a website that is unavailable when someone tries to access it because the server is down? If a web hosting company has low uptime for example under 90%, then this is bad enough to avoid. Generally you should be looking for at least 99%.

Popularity

Make sure the company is popular amongst other website owners. Read reviews, blogs, forums and do your research before jumping into a contract with any hosting provider. Basically, the more people who uses a service, the better they should be at that service, generally speaking that is.

Support

After service customer support is very important when choosing the right web hosting company because you really don't want to end up with a host that takes a long time to reply or not at all to your enquiries. I can almost guarantee you now that once you've bought your hosting, you will need to contact customer support one time or the other for issues such as server settings, advice or compatibility. Absolutely vital that you choose one that provides fast responses and one that will solve your problems so as to not hinder your web progress.

Features and Compatibility

This is another massive factor when choosing your host. Why? Because you don't want to buy hosting only to realise that they don't support what you are trying to build or don't provide a service that you need. These could include the following non-exhaustive list:

  • PHP/ASP
  • ecommerce sites
  • open source projects such as Joomla/Magento/etc
  • Ruby on Rails/Perl/Python/CGI
  • email addresses
  • ability to modify settings yourself
  • Telnet access
  • FTP accounts
  • parked domains
  • unlimited diskspace
  • unlimited bandwdith
  • unlimited subdomains
  • unlimited databases

Cost

Cost is a very personal factor that only you can judge because of your budget. Some people may think £10 per month is cheap while others may think it's far too much for one month's hosting. If you're looking for basic hosting for a startup website or small business website, then you should be looking at around £4-£5 range. Note that most web hosts will give a discount if you take up web hosting with them for a longer duration such as 2 or 3 years. This can dramatically drive down the cost of your hosting to around £2-£3. Every little helps!
